Processes governing the amplification of ensemble spread in a medium-range forecast with large forecast uncertainty
2019
This study provides a process-based perspective on the amplification of forecast uncertainty and forecast errors in ensemble forecasts. A case from the North Atlantic Waveguide and Downstream Impact Experiment that exhibits large forecast uncertainty is analysed. Two aspects of the ensemble behaviour are considered: (a) the mean divergence of the ensemble members, indicating the general amplification of forecast uncertainty, and (b) the divergence of the best and worst members, indicating extremes in possible error-growth scenarios. To analyse the amplification of forecast uncertainty, a tendency equation for the ensemble variance of potential vorticity (PV) is derived and partitioned into …
Short and Medium Range Order in Se1-xTexGlasses
1997
Complementary XAFS measurements (LURE and NSLS) of Se 1 - x Te x glasses have been carried out on both the Se and Te K-edges at low and room temperatures. Using a multi-shell best fit analysis procedure, we have reconstructed the Se and Te local environment: (i) first shell intrachain nearest neighbors (Se-Se 1 , Se-Te 1 , Te-Se 1 ,and Te-Te 1 ); (ii) second shell intrachain (Se-Se 2 and Se-Te 2 ) and interchain next nearest neighbors (Se⇔Se 3 single scattering in the chains Se-Se 1 -Se 3 and Se-Te 1 -Se 3 ). For the first and second coordination shells we suggest that the intrachain chemical order increases with Te content. On the other hand, we propose a model of random distribution of Se…
Structural Organization of Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels Obtained by Freezing and Thawing Techniques: A SANS Study
2005
The structural organization of matter in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels obtained by repeatedly freezing and thawing dilute solutions of PVA in D2O is investigated by use of small-angle neutron scattering measurements (SANS). This study is the first systematic and quantitative investigation in the medium range of length scales on PVA hydrogels obtained by freezing and thawing techniques. The studied gels have a complex hierarchical structure, extending over a wide range of length scales. The structural organization on the micron length scale originates from the presence of two separated phases constituted by polymer-rich and polymer-poor regions. The network structure may be interpreted…
Lösungseigenschaften von polymethylmethacrylat und polystyrol aus Röntgenkleinwinkelmessungen
1969
Temperature and pH Dependence of Gd-DOTA and Gd-DTPA Complexes Dissociation Studied by EXAFS
1997
The Gd L3-edge of Gd(DTPA) 2- and Gd(DOTA) - complexes, in crystalline state and aqueous solutions presenting various pH (0.15-8) at different temperatures (25-90 °C), are investigated by XAFS experiments. For the Gd(DTPA) 2- . complexes we observe a strong pH (0.15-1.5) dependence of XAFS signals. On the other hand, the XAFS signals of Gd(DOTA) - complexes exhibit a light pH (1-1.5) dependence and for pH<1 we observe a ligand decomposition. Conceming both complexes, we note just a light temperature dependence. To obtain information about the short and medium range order (up to 5 A), multiple scattering calculation is performed. For the first coordination shell, we apply multi-shell fitting…
